Hoya cumingiana ‘Albomarginata’ is the outer-variegated form of Hoya cumingiana, a distinctive small-leaved Hoya species native to Borneo, Java, and the Philippines.

Unlike many Hoyas that grow primarily as long twining vines, Hoya cumingiana has a more compact, shrubby and branching growth habit. Its stems develop closely spaced nodes carrying pairs of small leaves, eventually producing arching or cascading branches as they become longer.

The leaves of the species are relatively small, typically oval to oblong, with a firm texture and prominent central vein. In the form commonly circulated as ‘Albomarginata’, the green center of each leaf is surrounded by a creamy white to pale yellow outer margin. The amount and shape of the variegation can vary from leaf to leaf, and under stronger light the pale margins may develop warmer pink or reddish coloration.

Hoya cumingiana was formally described by Joseph Decaisne in 1844 from Philippine material. The species was named for Hugh Cuming, the English naturalist and plant collector who collected extensively in the Philippines during the nineteenth century. Historical herbarium material includes Cuming collection no. 1480.

The flowers are produced in hanging umbels and are quite different in appearance from the soft pink or white flowers associated with many familiar Hoyas. The reflexed corolla is greenish-yellow to yellow, contrasting with a darker reddish-brown to purple corona. Individual flowers are approximately 1.2 cm across, and an umbel may contain up to around 20 flowers.

The flowers are fragrant and may remain open for approximately a week. An interesting characteristic of Hoya cumingiana is that its flower peduncles are generally deciduous after flowering rather than being repeatedly reused in the way persistent peduncles are in many other Hoya species.

Historical records from the Philippines document Hoya cumingiana growing on limestone cliffs and rocks in relatively open habitats, from near sea level to elevations of approximately 1,600 meters. Current taxonomic records recognize a wider native distribution that also includes Borneo and Java.

Hoya cumingiana has historically been confused with the closely related Hoya densifolia. Modern studies of leaf architecture have examined the two taxa in detail and found differences in leaf shape, size, venation and other characters, illustrating why accurately identified cultivated material is especially valuable within this group.

The name “cumingiana” honors Hugh Cuming (1791–1865), whose extensive collections from the Philippines contributed significantly to the botanical study of the region.

The name ‘Albomarginata’ is descriptive: “albo” refers to white and “marginata” to the margin, referring to the pale outer variegation surrounding the green center of the leaf.

A note about this plant: The botanical and historical information above refers to Hoya cumingiana as a species. ‘Albomarginata’, also widely sold as Albo or Outer Variegated, is a cultivated variegated form. We have not found primary documentation establishing the origin, discoverer, or formal cultivar publication of this variegated clone. We therefore use ‘Albomarginata’ as the collector/trade name under which the plant is commonly circulated and do not claim that our plant can be traced to the original Hugh Cuming collection or another documented wild accession.
