According to historical collector accounts, the original plant was collected in 1997 near Tenom, Sabah, Borneo, growing close to a residence with a large number of chickens — the source of the unusual "Chicken Farm" name.

This plant is widely circulated in horticulture as Hoya finlaysonii 'Chicken Farm', although its precise taxonomic placement has been interpreted differently over time. Because the original material was reportedly wild-collected rather than intentionally hybridized, "Chicken Farm" is better understood as a locality or collection name rather than a hybrid name.
