Hoya dischorensis

Hoya dischorensis is a New Guinea Hoya originally described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1913.

The species was based on Schlechter’s collection no. 19834, gathered in June 1909 in the Dischore Mountains of northeastern New Guinea. The plant was found growing epiphytically on trees in forest at approximately 900 meters elevation.

Schlechter described Hoya dischorensis as a sparsely branched climbing plant with slender, flexible stems and rather widely spaced leaves. The leaves are oblong, slightly fleshy, and smooth on both surfaces, measuring approximately 6.5–11.5 cm long and 2.8–5 cm wide in the original description.

The inflorescences were described as umbels containing approximately 10–15 flowers. Individual flowers are about 1.6 cm across, with a rotate corolla in a cream-yellow color. The inner surface of the corolla is partly covered with fine hairs, particularly toward the margins.

Hoya dischorensis belongs to a closely related group of New Guinea Hoyas currently referred to as the Hoya ischnopus complex. Its exact taxonomic boundaries remain under active interpretation, and some recent treatments place Hoya dischorensis within a broader Hoya ischnopus.

A note about this plant: Species-level information above is based on Schlechter’s original description and current botanical records. Hoya dischorensis is still accepted as a separate species by Plants of the World Online, although some recent treatments place it within Hoya ischnopus. We retain the Hoya dischorensis name under which this plant circulates in cultivation and do not claim that our particular plant is directly traceable to Schlechter’s original collection.
