Hoya 'Mathilde' (Splash) is a charming collector Hoya with petite, substantial foliage covered in variable silver markings.

'Mathilde' is a documented hybrid of Hoya carnosa × Hoya serpens. It originated in Belgium in the summer of 1994 from an uncontrolled pollination in the garden of Hoya grower Emilio Begine. Another seedling from the same seed pod later became the cultivar Hoya 'Chouke'.

The foliage combines characteristics of both parents: the leaves are small and rounded like Hoya serpens, but larger, thicker, and more succulent in texture, reflecting the influence of Hoya carnosa.

Silver is naturally part of the original 'Mathilde' foliage. Plants circulated as “Splash” are generally selected for stronger or more extensive silver markings. Individual leaves may range from predominantly green with fine silver flecking to heavily splashed leaves with broad areas of silver.

Mature plants produce clusters of fuzzy, pale flowers with contrasting darker pink-to-red centers. The flowers are also reported to be pleasantly fragrant.

Please note that the amount and distribution of silver can vary considerably from leaf to leaf. A highly splashed cutting does not guarantee that every future leaf will develop the same amount of silver.

A note about this plant: The hybrid history and parentage above are based on published Hoya cultivar records and historical publications. “Splash” is widely used in horticulture to describe more heavily silvered Hoya 'Mathilde' material, but we have not found documentation establishing “Splash” as a separate formally registered cultivar name. We therefore use it as a descriptive horticultural designation and cannot independently document the selection history of our particular splashy clone.
